Co-design: Joe Ciaglia, Ron Kimler, Michael Hernandez
Project Overview:
Nike wanted to create a skateable sculpture that looked nothing like a skatepark feature, but would highlight the skate styles of three of Nike SB’s top athletes: Luan Oliveira, Shane O’neill and Sean Malto. This sculpture was to be assembled at the Buffalo Central Transit station in Buffalo NY, and have the Lunar One-Shot commercial filmed on location.
Scope:
• 3D conceptual Live Design sessions • 3D modeling • Renderings and presentations • Construction document package • On-site project management for construction
Design Challenges:
One of the biggest challenges proved to be emulating the stylings of sculptor Tony Smith while creating a sculpture that worked perfectly for all three skaters.
Solution:
We worked with builder Ron Kimler + Joe Ciaglia with California Skateparks, to design and build a sculpture that met the vision of Nike for this project. The design sessions were all done using our live design sessions to bring the Nike Team, CA Skateparks and DugOut together for a streamlined design process. We were able to quickly design a solution that would be aesthetically correct, on budget and able to be pre-built offsite and assembled in an abandoned train station in Buffalo, NY.
